Jacob Nielsen’s Tips about Creating the Main Page of a Web Site
Jacob Nielsen is a renowned expert in Web usability, damning awkward interface of software and web sites, presented ten major guidelines for the establishment of a web site main page. Such guidelines you may also find on SEOP.com.
“Home page of a company website is its face and a starting point for most visitors. Improving the homepage, you increase the value of the whole site,” – says Nielsen’s article.
Nielsen advises webmasters to give detailed information about a company, as this will help attract new customers and provide first visitors with the main purpose of a project. Besides, Nielsen does not recommend to title the site with the words “The” or “Welcome To”, as in this case, the home page can be lost among millions of similar sites that begin with “T” or “W”.
All corporate information such as addresses, phone numbers, press releases, etc., must be collected in a single section, the link to which should be on the main page. Search box must be present on the main page, and shouldn’t be too small. “When users want to find something on your site – writes Nielsen – they are always looking for “where to type letters.”
In addition, Nielsen advises to give examples of content, extract links and provide quick access to the most important pages.
